KMS membranes and systems not only separate sugars from fibrous, proteinaceous and other impurities, but can also play an important role in purifying and concentrating them

The primary application of membranes in the sweetener market is the removal of impurities using microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF). This purification step promotes the efficient operation of downstream processes such as ion exchange, evaporation, etc. KMS' nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes are used to concentrate maple sugar and other sweeteners.

For more than ten years, KMS membranes have performed consistently, demonstrating ease of cleanability and have been able to withstand the high temperatures of sweetener processing. Permeate quality has been consistent in spite of fluctuations in sweeter juice quality.

KMS offers a variety of products for optimum system design.

KMS provides full systems for sweetener applications using our experience with the application to select the membranes and design the process. A variety of membrane products are used for these applications. The primary products are:

HFM-116 spiral membranes
• Available in 4" and 8" diameter modules
• Hard wrapped
• High temperature (95º C) capability
• Ultrafiltration membrane at 30,000 Daltons

MFK-618 spiral membranes
• Available in 4" and 8" diameter modules
• Hard wrapped and net wrapped options available
• Microfiltration membrane at 0.1 micron pore size

SUPER-COR^® and SUPER-G^® tubular membrane
• ½" and 1" diameter tubes available in multiple configurations
• Microfiltration membrane at 0.1 micron pore size

TFC^® family
• 4" and 8" diameter spiral elements available
• Nanofiltration and reverse osmosis elements

In addition, there are several other specialty membrane products that are applied in the sweetener industry. These include nanofiltration membranes and ultrafiltration membranes with different molecular weight cut-offs. Please contact us so we can discuss your application in more detail.
