KMS membranes provide a positive barrier against viruses, bacteria, turbidity, and other water-borne microorganisms for safer drinking water
Most surface water used for the production of drinking water requires filtration to remove turbidity and suspended solids before it can be used safely. Conventional treatment systems employ a wide range of techniques to separate suspended solids, such as coagulation and flocculation, settling, or flotation. These techniques require constant monitoring, evaluation and adjustment by operators. KMS membrane systems require only minimal operator monitoring and often run unattended. Membrane systems from KMS provide high quality potable water. Hollow fiber ultrafiltration (UF) membranes deliver excellent turbidity removal in a compact, efficient package. Cryptosporidium, Giarda, Virus Removal KMS PMPWTM membranes are used to remove microorganisms that are chlorine-resistant. Under California Title 22 Surface Water Treatment Rule (SWTR). PMPWTM UF membranes have been certified at: • 4-log (99.99%) removal credit for Cryptosporidium • 4-log (99.99%) removal credit for Giardia • 4-log (99.99%) removal credit for viruses Since PMPWTM UF membranes provide an excellent barrier to water-borne microorganisms, less chlorine is required for disinfection. In addition, the amount of chlorine necessary to maintain the concentration of residual chlorine in distribution is diminished due to the high quality of the PMPWTM UF membrane filtrate. Read how KMS helped Cass County, Missouri make their surface water supply safe for drinking. TOC Reduction Small, dissolved, naturally occurring organic molecules react with chlorine to form trihalomethanes (THM) and haloacetic acids (HAA5). KMS membranes reduce Total Organic Carbon (TOC), reducing the potential for THM formation and helping municipalities meet stringent regulations. Inorganic Contaminate Removal Low levels of iron and manganese taint many otherwise excellent quality waters. While these minerals pose no health threat, the staining they cause is the source of many complaints. Arsenic and perchlorate, on the other hand, pose significant health risks when found in municipal water. The KMS team of membrane professionals is experienced in designing systems that deal with these inorganic contaminants. Process design often includes pretreatment with either oxidants or coagulants (depending upon the other contaminants in the water) followed by ultrafiltration. Read about ozone pretreatment for iron and manganese removal used in Littleton, MA. Water Softening KMS nanofiltration membranes can be used to soften hard water with no added chemicals. In the alternative, KMS ultrafiltration membranes can be used in conjunction with conventional softening for optimum performance. Read how Appleton, Wisconsin combined membrane technology with a lime softening process. Desalination To make drinking water from brackish water or seawater, a combination of ultrafiltration followed by reverse osmosis can be very cost effective. UF cartridges used as pretreatment can significantly extend the useful life of RO elements. When treating brackish water with relatively low TDS, UF can be used both as pretreatment to a reverse osmosis system, and also to produce permeate for blending with RO product water. The result is water for distribution that not only tastes good but is less expensive to produce. This approach also permits the designer to significantly reduce the size of the RO system and its associated life cycle costs. Call us first!
