In areas where rainfall is scarce, reuse of water from municipal wastewater treatment is becoming common and sometimes mandatory. KMS membranes in pressure cartridge systems and in submerged modules for membrane bioreactors are used to reclaim water from municipal wastewater for use in irrigation, wetland maintenance, and for indirect potable reuse. In the city of Scottsdale, AZ, KMS has supplied membranes for a 12 MGD reverse osmosis system to desalinate and purify the city's tertiary effluent for reinjection into the ground. The city is then able to use this return to groundwater as a water credit, allowing it to increase the amount of groundwater pumped for potable and irrigation purposes.

KMS also manufactures the advanced PURON^® membrane bioreactor technology for use in treating municipal wastewater. Unlike the positive pressure and controlled flow path of crossflow membrane filtration, PURON^® ultrafiltration modules are submerged in basins of wastewater, and a slight negative pressure draws water through the walls of the fiber from the outside to the inside. These submerged hollow fiber membrane modules have numerous advantages over conventional wastewater treatment technology. The effluent quality is very high, meeting stringent regulations for discharge. When reclaiming wastewater, the effluent can be reused for many water applications including irrigation.

Bacteria and Virus Removal, Turbidity, TOC Reduction, and Demineralization
Ultrafiltration with pressure cartridges or with membrane bioreactors will filter out suspended solids, bacteria, and viruses to meet pretreatment requirements. Reverse osmosis can then be applied to remove dissolved contaminants such as salts and organics.
