Tubular Membranes Provide a Constant Flow of Solid Solutions

KMS tubular membrane products.
Since the introduction of membrane treatment technology back in the 1970's, a variety of membrane types and configurations have been developed, including tubular membrane. Tubular membranes operate in tangential, or cross-flow, design where process fluid is pumped along the membrane surface in a sweeping type action. The membrane is cast on the inside surface of a porous tube. The feed solution is pumped through the center of the tube at velocities as high as 20 ft/sec. These cross-flow velocities minimize the formation of a concentration polarization layer on the membrane surface, promoting high and stable flux and easy cleaning, especially when the objective is to achieve high suspended solids in the MF, UF or NF concentrate. Permeate is driven through the membrane to be directed out of the system or back into the process depending on the application.

There are many advantages in tubular membrane configurations. Besides their rugged construction, they have a distinct advantage of being able to process high suspended solids, and concentrate product successfully and repeatedly to relatively high end point concentration levels without plugging. A common objective of an end-of-pipe waste treatment UF system is to reduce waste volume as much as possible to reduce concentrate hauling costs. For juice clarification applications, tubular membrane systems produce the greatest yields and the highest final suspended solids concentration levels. Tubular MF, UF and NF systems do not require significant prefiltration. Some tubular products have the ability to be mechanically cleaned with spongeballs. Spongeballs can be used in process, and are also used to enhance chemical cleaning by reducing CIP time and cleaning chemicals.

KONSOLIDATOR™ 78 tubular UF system for industrial wastewater treatment
Tubular membranes remain on the system until end of life. Membrane life depends on the process and the membrane type. Tubular membranes typically see 2 to 10 years life.

Tubular membranes are based on either PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) or PS (polysulfone). They are capable of continuous, reproducible processing cycles, which means they are cleanable, durable, easy to operate and a proven advance in technology.

Tubular Membranes are ideally suited to:
•  Metalworking Oily Waste
•  Wastewater Minimization and Recovery from Industrial Processes
•  Juice Clarification
•  Degreaser Recovery
•  Pulp & Paper Water Treatment and Recovery
•  Paint, Pigment, Dye Recovery  and Purification
•  Dialysis Procedures
•  Mining Operations Wastewater Treatment
•  Food Processing
•  Cosmetics Manufacturing Wastewater Treatment
•  Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing
•  Recovery of CIP Solutions plus many other demanding applications requiring large open flow areas with substantially high plugging resistance.

SUPER-COR® 96 Sanitary System for Juice Clarification
KMS tubular membranes are generally constructed as a membrane layer cast on a sturdy backing material. This backing material supports the thin inside membrane layer. These tubular membranes operate inside-to-outside —  the pressurized feed stream flows through the inside of the tube, while the water permeates through the membranes on the outside of the tube. High tangential flow across the membrane surface helps limit membrane fouling. Other operating techniques that can be employed with tubular membrane systems include mechanical "spongeballing" and retentate reverse flow. KMS tubular membranes can be bundled in parallel or in series configurations.
System Maintenance

KMS ASSIST® Service and Maintenance Programs help keep your system operating efficiently. KMS offers on-site and off-site membrane cleaning studies to refine your system's operation and prolong membrane life.

KMS Specialty Membrane Cleaning and Pretreatment Chemicals

Koch Membrane Systems can supply a full range of cleaning and pretreatment chemicals formulated specifically for members and membrane plants. Regular use of KOCHKLEEN® Membrane Cleaners and KOCHTREAT® Antiscalants will help prolong membrane life and protect your process.

KMS specialty chemicals are formulated by the same scientists that develop polymers for KMS and design KMS membranes. Unlike other cleaning companies, KMS only focuses on cleaning chemicals for membranes and systems. Therefore, KMS has taken its core competency and applied it to developing superior cleaning chemicals for the benefit of all KMS customers.
