Recovery of Caustic Soda from Textile Mercerization Operations

Mercerization of cotton fabric is conducted by passing the fabric through 25% caustic soda (NaOH) at 100-120° F. The next step is standardization consisting of a wash with warm water at about 110° F which is followed by a hot water rinse at 185° F. The waste water out of the standardization step contains about 6% NaOH. This caustic is normally dumped or neutralized. A make-up of water and concentrated caustic is constantly added to the dipping tank.

The Sandoflex process is similar, but it uses 10-15% KOH and chemicals instead of 25% NaOH.

In order to recover the NaOH or KOH from the standardization wash stream and to avoid a waste problem, a membrane unit may be applied. The membrane permeate, which consists of purified caustic is further concentrated by evaporation. Process schematics is shown in Figure 1.

This process reduces caustic use and eliminates the need for neutralization chemicals. Payback of the membrane unit may be as low as 1.5 years.
